The recent success of the 4th Annual Student Screenwriting Competition at Mercy University highlights the university’s commitment to nurturing creative talent across various media disciplines. This year’s winning screenplays showcase not only the outstanding abilities of the students but also the diverse storytelling potential found within the Media Studies Program’s three concentrations: Cinema Studies, Digital Journalism, and Media Production.
At the forefront of this year’s competition is Andrew Bisson, a senior in the Cinema Studies concentration, who was awarded the top prize for his whimsical short comedy script titled Bats. In this imaginative narrative, we follow J.J., an endearing bat who experiences a life-altering change when he suddenly gains the ability to see. Bisson’s clever premise invites audiences to explore themes of perspective and identity through the comical exploits of his feathered protagonist. Judging by the enthusiastic reception of Bats, it is evident that Bisson’s unique voice and comedic timing resonated with both the judges and his peers, marking him as a standout talent within the cinema studies arena.
The competition also recognized two impressive runners-up, each with their own unique storytelling approach and thematic exploration. Maleek Munroe, a senior within the Digital Journalism concentration, presented 1696, a gripping period drama that dives into the historical complexities of witch trials. By weaving together a narrative that blends fact and fiction, Munroe not only provides insight into a pivotal moment in history but also encourages discussions about societal fears, prejudice, and the consequences of mass hysteria. His work illustrates the powerful role that journalism can play in storytelling, offering a thoughtful commentary on how the past informs present-day issues.
The second runner-up, Nicholas Roth, a senior in the Media Production concentration, brought his innovative project RU-DUM to life in an impressive short film. The story revolves around a soldier returning from boot camp who receives a mysterious package containing four sticks and five rocks. The short film adaptation of his screenplay further highlights his multifaceted talent, as he brings a unique vision to life on screen, marrying script to visual storytelling. Roth’s attention to detail, particularly in the film’s art direction and sound design, stands as a testament to his artistic vision, demonstrating that he is not merely a writer but a formidable storyteller capable of engaging audiences through multiple mediums
The variety of genres represented in this year’s winning screenplays—from light-hearted comedy to historical drama—demonstrate the versatility and range of the Media Studies Program at Mercy University. Each of these young writers is not only honing their craft but also applying their personal experiences and perspectives to their work, paving the way for a new generation of storytellers ready to engage with diverse audiences.
As the program continues to grow and evolve, the achievements of these students serve as inspiration for their peers and a testament to the supportive and enriching environment provided by Mercy University. The competition is not merely a platform for showcasing talent; it is a celebration of creativity, critical thinking, and the power of storytelling to connect with others. With promising voices like Bisson, Munroe, and Roth emerging from the program, the future of screenwriting at Mercy University looks incredibly bright.
